ASU grad’s Somatic Labs “animates” touch
Somatic Labs was founded by Arizona State University graduate Shantanu Bala. Shantanu spent eight years at ASU researching haptic technology and assistive technologies for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. His published research focuses on translating visual and auditory information into tactile stimulations felt on a person’s back. This haptic platform delivers information through rich tactile patterns that move across the skin, “animating” a person’s sense of touch. Somatic Labs uses touch as a new channel of communication to make information more accessible and intuitive, allowing everyone to be more engaged with the world around them.
